Bring the needle up through the fabric at A. Take a small horizontal stitch from right to left at B and insert the needle at C. Bring the thread through at D. Without piercing the fabric, pass the needle under the crossed threads at B and insert at E. Carry on in this way. Do not pull the stitches too tightly, otherwise the regularity of the centre plait will be lost.
