A Beginner's Guide To Crazy Patchwork
1201ach134.pdf

This crazy patchwork square could be the start of something big! Follow our step-by-step instructions and build up your stitches for a stunning effect.

You Will Need
A selection of silk fabric pieces in toning colours

To Work
With your first piece of silk cut an uneven shape with either 3, 4 or 5 sides.

Cut another strip of fabric matching the length of the next side of your central shape including the piece that you have just put on, and stitch in place as before (see Fig. 2).

Designer's Tip
If you feel that some of the seam edges have become too long, you may like to join two pieces of silk together then apply to the required edge.

The Embroidery
A good way of getting started is to use basic stitches to cover each seam line. Don’t be afraid to experiment and it is important to do your own thing! Use a selection of threads. Try a medium thread for herringbone, feather stitch, buttonhole stitch and chain stitch. Use finer threads for mirror buttonhole and crossed buttonhole. But the important thing is to experiment. Try feather stitch, herringbone stitch, buttonhole stitch, crossed buttonhole, up and down buttonhole, running stitch and stepped running stitch, chain stitch and straight stitch. Create patterns with your stitches, leaving areas which can be further embellished with other stitches later.

Further Embellishment
Begin to build on your original stitches.

This is where we get down to some serious embellishment. With complimentary threads, try Fancy Herringbone, Laced Double Running Stitch,
